For the records,#BreakingTheCoconut is a book.
Sometime early in 2014 during my visit to a mutual friend our discussion veered into the issue of leaving a mark on the sands of time for the generation behind us and what we had done in our ongoing life as humans. It was our own way of being accountable since we made that decision way back.
After much back and forth we concluded there was this reoccurring belief we had to wait till we have lived old enough to sound like sages before we left a mark. After much talk over food and a few drinks the idea for a book showed up again in my minds filters.
Remembering my last experience with writing one and losing everything:thanks to a computer virus (This was after three months of Spartan discipline) I knew this was my chance to rewrite yesterday.
To make myself more accountable this time I had someone on my team.
I shared the idea of the book to him and he was game. I knew very well if I got someone involved I stood a better chance of winning this time and that was the beginning of the journey.
I wanted to share a book about Africans anyone anywhere in the world was going to identify with and get heads-up to do the small impossibles hence i reached out to like minds.
What Was Our Why?
We want anyone who reads #BreakingTheCoconut to BECOME more and be spurred to make a difference.
Growing up In Africa, our cultural heritage of telling stories was one of the many ways of sharing values our parents held close to.
The best leadership stories our parents shared were that of animals which turned out to be parodies. The tortoise tale was the most reoccurring and even though we laughed over those stories, the real moral was marinated in them without it being spelt out.
Our objective was simply creating an imaginary under the moon experience from the story tellers evolving journey.
Being realistic the settings of under the moon might never come again thanks to our phones and electronic gadgets. Today under the moon could be your Personal Digital Assistants.(PDA’s)
The eleven changemakers from Africa who chronicled their life journey and shared thier lessons learnt aced it.
It was about writing a leadership book our own way. Everyone who shared their story shared a part of them they probably took for granted because they had evolved. Their vulnerability while sharing on this #BookProject was on another level. For lack of words I, would say #EPIC.
Maybe when we read #BreakingTheCoconut in ten years’ time the influencers would finally have outlived their current version. However, would it have met our objective of inspiring change and telling our stories?
In the end ,this wasn’t about writing a book. This is a heads -up we put in a book. Writing our stories was synonymous to inviting ourselves to the “biggerparty” of adding our content to the many competing for our attention. Maybe we gate crashed that party to tell everyone who cared to listen why they were not completely correct with the single stories about people living in Africa.
So rather that arguing with the school of thought that still refers to “Africa as a country” .We keyed into the power of Collaborative sharing which is the currency of the Social era: to Inspire and I bet we did.
#BreakingTheCoconut would be available globaly this yuletide (watch this space for details)
In the end, this is iteration. We are on a journey to keep getting better. Our best version is ahead
Many atimes we wish we could jump the queue.
Sometimes we hope we could press the fast-foward button like its a movie to see the end and forget the details.Beautiful thoughts. However, in the grand scheme of things, withouth the process, we are flawed already because we would be playing trial and error with very important tools.
Flash Shots From The Eagle Story.
The Eagletwhen born has its mouth and eyes wide open. It sort of looks like a mouth that’s been attached to a bunch of fuzzy feathers. The parents are kept busy keeping that mouth filled because the eaglet has an insatiable desire for food. The eaglet knows whenever it opens its mouth, Dad and Mom eagle are going to fill it with good things.
The Mother Eagle ushering the Eaglet to fly
When Mother eagle sees that the loose feathers are blown away, she spreads her wings out and gives forth a certain scream. Somehow the little eaglet knows that it is a command for it to step out on one the Mother’s wings and firmly secure itself with its talons, and then with it’s beak – take hold of one of the big strong feathers.
Mother eagle, making sure little eagle is securely set on her wing – lets out another scream and launches off the edge of the nest into space. She begins to ascend, the little eagle holding on for dear life
The eaglet has never experienced anything like this before. He’s going places he’s never gone before. He’s seeing things he’s never seen before. It’s thrilling! But just as he’s having the time of his life, Mother eagle suddenly flutters her wings and shakes him loose from her wing – right in the middle of the air – hundreds of feet from the ground. It’s solo flight time!”
Mother eagle shakes the little one loose, she doesn’t say, “Well, you’re on your own now, see you around,” and fly away. No, she doesn’t do that, but she slowly begins to circle around the surprised little eaglet keeping a concerned watchful eye on him as he flounders and flutters trying to fly for the first time. Furiously, he flaps his wings, he turns, somersaults, and does everything to try to stay aloft, but slowly he starts to lose altitude.
When Mother eagle sees her little one get dangerously close to the ground, she swiftly swoops down, snares him with a claw, and carries him upward to a great height and starts the process all over again. Each day she repeats this, until finally the little eaglets wings has become strong and he is able to stay aloft riding the air currents, soaring as effortlessly as the parent eagles do.
In as much as the eaglet might wish to wish away this process the eaglet can’t survive without it
What Process Are you Undergoing?
Remember It’s manadatory for the final Product.
So,join the queue, undergo that tutelage under one who is better, horne your skills, smell the coffee, wait, before you speak :be sure, stretch your muscles, sharpen your sword, reject the idea of fast forwarding the moment.
Enjoy the process.Someday, they would be beautiful memories.
I promised sharing on this topic because I feel a sense of responsibility doing this.
It’s my conclusion that the word Best practice is being thrown around by every tom dick or harry and some of us have our opinionated versions on this which in the grand scheme of things turns out faulty sometimes.
With a bit of awareness, we get better.
As kids, learning the alphabet our teachers taught us A was for Apple B for ball and the rest … however, this days super kids understand A to be for Android B for Ben ten…
Should my kid read my primary school books maybe he would assume life was way too easier in my time.
How do I go back In time to my younger self to explain what an Android is?
You see, times have evolved and wouldnt stop. The most important skill-set we need on your journey…
